After a successful implementation of no-horn rule in Kathmandu, tourist city Pokhara has also implemented the rule from Sunday.
The rule received positive public response on its first day as vehicles stranded in traffic jam in Prithvi Chok refrained from honking their horns. But a few of them still beeping were approached by traffic police and informed about the new rule.
“We are excited about how the vehicle operators supported us in implementing the rule by not beeping unnecessarily on the first day,” said Kaski Traffic Police Chief Bishwo Raj Adhikari, “After all, the benefit of curbing sound pollution ultimately goes to the city dwellers and tourists.”
Traffic police stationed at various places made drivers aware about the new rule instead of slapping them with fine. Authorities believe that despite some defiance, the rule remained largely successful on its first day and if drivers continue to support the rule, Pokhara will soon become a ‘horn-free’ zone.
However, some members of public were of the view that the rule will not remain given the poor road infrastructure in the city.
Traffic police say that they will continue the awareness drive for a week after which they will impose fine on the offenders.
