Govt-Dr KC talks fail to make headway

Talks between the government team and representatives of Dr Govinda KC failed to make much headway on Sunday after the former failed to present its plans to endorse the Health Profession Education (HPE) Bill.
Hopes were high of some sort of breakthrough with Health Minister Giriraj Mani Pokhrel, Education Minister Gopal Man Shrestha and Ranju Kumari Jha, the chairperson of Women, Children, Senior Citizens and Social Welfare Committee of the Legislature-Parliament, representing the government side at the meeting. But it was not to be.

Dr Abhisek Raj Singh, a representative of Dr KC, said the ministers had agreed to provide a time-bound commitment to endorsing the HPE Bill.
The members of government talk team also asked the Institute of Medicine to draft its autonomous framework and forward it to the Tribhuvan University for endorsement by the Ministry of Education.
The government talk team is led by Shanta Bahadur Shrestha, secretary at the Education Ministry.
The fast-unto-death protest of Dr KC entered seventh day on Saturday with his health condition deteriorating fast.

An endorsement of HPE Bill is the key demand of Dr KC, who has been pressing for reforms in the country’s medical education sector for the past five years.
