Govt forms 3-member team to hold talks with Dr KC


The government on Thursday formed a team to hold talks with agitating Dr Govinda KC who has been staging his 11th hunger strike for the past four days in the Capital demanding an immediate endorsement of Health Profession Education policy.

The Cabinet meeting on Thursday formed a team led by Education Secretary Shanta Bahadur Shrestha. Secretary at Health Ministry Kiran Regmi and secretary at Prime Minister Office Gopi Mainali are the members of the team.
Senior orthopedic surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital Dr KC has been repeatedly staging fast-unto-death demanding to end anomalies in medical education sector.

Dr KC’s primary demand is a mandatory enrolment of meritorious students in private medical colleges that had been enrolling students with low marks, charging exorbitantly high fees.

His other demands include immediate endorsement of the Health Profession Education Bill (HPEC); appointment of the associate dean and the campus chief on the recommendations of the dean; granting authority to the IoM to enroll students, set fees and grant affiliation; de-affiliation of medical colleges that defy directives of the government and the court.
