Nepali national schools’ debate team is all set to represent the country in the upcoming World Schools Debating Championships (WSDC). The 2017 edition of the annual competition is slated to start on August 1, in Bali, Indonesia, featuring debaters from 52 nations.
The Nepali national team comprises of four debaters—Abhinit Anand, Chandani Thapa, Poonam Regmi and Prabhjeet Singh; including judge Prasad Gyawali; and coach Avash Byanjankar. Also representing Nepal is Poshan Khanal as an independent judge.
The Nepali participants were selected out of a national debate competition organised by Debate Network Nepal (DNN) in April this year.
Speaking about the team’s preparation, Nepali team coach Avash Byanjankar said, “I am very impressed with the team’s dedication as they’ve been spending more than eight hours a day preparing for the tournament for the last couple of weeks.”
During the preliminary round of the competition, Nepal will take on nations such as former champion Australia, India, Uganda, Israel.
Nepal made its first appearance at WSDC in Doha, in 2010. The debating movement started becoming more organised from the year 2014 in the country and thus its third participation in Singapore 2015 Championship saw Nepal’s ranking improve significantly.
